NCBBA third annual Red Drum Tournament is on for Oct. 19-22
The North Carolina Beach Buggy Association’s (NCBBA) third annual Red Drum Tournament, headquartered at Frank and Fran’s tackle shop, in Avon will be held as scheduled Wednesday through Saturday, Oct. 19-22.
“The Board of Directors feels that it’s important to the people of Hatteras Island for this tournament to be held,” NCBBA said in a media release. “While we realize the tri-villages and Avon suffered terrible losses from Hurricane Irene and many people are in great need of basic services and goods, there are many residents on Hatteras Island who are not working because there are no visitors coming. The board felt it was important to do our part in trying to stimulate the local economy by not canceling the tournament.
“We may have to take a ferry ride if the road is not rebuilt in time, but we’re fishing!” the board said.
The NCBBA board also voted to donate all tournament and raffle proceeds to the Cape Hatteras United Methodist Men to help the people on the island.
In addition, this year NCBBA will sponsor a “Toys for Tots” drive during tournament registration and throughout the tournament.
The group is asking all tournament participants to bring unopened new toys and drop them off at Frank & Fran’s for the children of Hatteras Island.
During the first two tournaments, NCBBA collected non-perishable food items for the Hatteras Island Food Pantry.
NCBBA has already presented a check to the Outer Banks Community Foundation (OBCF) for $14,115 for disaster relief for Hatteras Island.
On Sept. 1, the NCBBA’s Board of Directors approved an immediate $2,000 donation to OBCF to help the folks on Hatteras Island. In addition, the NCBBA matched members’ donations up to an additional $5,000. Also, the association had a member increase the amount an additional $1,000 for a total of $6,000.
NCBBA will continue to accept donations thru October 31st at www.ncbba.org.
