Avon Pier planning to reopen by Memorial Day Weekend
The Avon Fishing Pier will hopefully reopen to the public by Memorial Day Weekend, per a recent update from pier operator, Joe Thompson.
“Whenever we talk about the Avon Pier, we always have to knock on wood,” said Thompson. “However, it looks like we will be able to open for the summer by Memorial Day.”
In previous years, the Avon Pier had a late start to the season due to damage from a number of nor’easters or hurricanes. In 2020, after suffering damage to the roof of the pier house after 2019’s Hurricane Dorian, and a split in the pier itself from a wave of subsequent nor’easters and storms, the pier was unable to open until June when repairs were finally completed.
This past year, however, there have been no major storms that damaged the pier, and annual required repairs were minimal. A new RV Park is being established next to the Avon Pier, so once some clean-up to the construction site is completed, and fishing supplies have been restocked, the pier can officially open.
“We need to do some clean up to the [RV construction] site, to ensure the parking area is safe for pier visitors,” said Thompson. “There may be some reduced parking this year, but there is still plenty of parking close to Pangea Tavern and the [adjacent Avon Beach Klub.]”
Thompson also noted that Stu’s Food Truck, which was a fixture in the pier parking lot in 2020 and which serves a wide range of breakfast and lunch items, will also be returning for the 2021 season.
The Avon Pier will also once again host Hatteras Island’s Independence Day fireworks, which are also returning for 2021, and which will be launched from the end of the pier on July 4.
