The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will be conducting a prescribed burn along the sound on the Dare County mainland on Saturday, Feb. 29, from Rt. 64 behind Manns Harbor south to Point Peter Rd, approximately two-thirds of the way down to Stumpy Point.

The purpose of the burn is to provide wildfire protection to both communities as well as improving wildlife habitat across the burn area. The unit, if the project can be completed, extends more than 5,000 acres. Be prepared to see significant smoke production across that area tomorrow.
