Multiple Dare County fire departments and emergency agencies, including all Hatteras Island volunteer fire departments (VFDs), responded to a major fire in Manns Harbor at the Manteo Furniture & Appliance Warehouse and Valentino Custom Boats building on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 27.
“Fire destroyed our Manns Harbor warehouse today, but fortunately no injuries to employees, neighbors and firefighters,” said Manteo Furniture & Appliance owner Ken Daniels in a social media update at 8:10 p.m.
“This was only part of our operation where we stored upholstery and casegoods. Appliances and bedding are kept in another warehouse. We will be open for business as usual tomorrow and will restock furniture ASAP. Appliance and bedding deliveries will continue as scheduled.
“Thanks to the firefighters from every department in Dare County, Tyrell County and even some from Currituck County. They had a difficult time battling without municipal water. (Water would unlikely make a difference in the outcome, but would have made their job easier.). Thanks to EMS and Emergency Management as well as everyone who reached out with their support!”
All Dare County fire departments were asked to respond, and agencies from Tyrell County and Currituck County were also on the scene, according to Island Free Press reporter, Jack Danz.
Within several hours, the warehouse had collapsed, but crews were continuing to work to contain the fire and protect surrounding structures in the industrial area of the Dare County mainland.
Initial reports of the fire occurred at approximately 3:16 p.m. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but an investigation will be conducted by Dare County Fire Marshall Steven Kovacs.
This is a developing story and the Island Free Press will continue to post updates as they become available.
