Dare County and Current TV have released a video of the May 14, 2024 meeting that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District held in coordination with the Dare County Board of Commissioners to provide information regarding the Corps’ remediation efforts to address petroleum contamination at the Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) at the former Naval Facility in Buxton.
Representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Dare County, the National Park Service and the U.S. Coast Guard attended the meeting, as did members of the recently formed Buxton Civic Association.
During the meeting, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District Commander Col. Ron Sturgeon shared information about the FUDS Program and the affected property in Buxton, including the contract that was recently awarded to remove a pipe and sample soil around it.
Close to 100 community members attended the meeting, which was held at the Fessenden Center in Buxton, and 13 attendees took the opportunity to ask questions and express their concerns during the public comment period that followed Col. Sturgeon’s briefing.
