Hatteras Island celebrates the Class of 2020 with car parade….WITH VIDEO
The COVID-19 pandemic has cancelled or postponed nearly every community event for the months of April and May, and this includes final activities for the high school graduating class. Sports and academic banquets, baccalaureate and other moments of recognition have all been curtailed by current state and local ordinances. The Hatteras Island community did not want to have to miss out on having a chance to formally honor the efforts of the class of 2020, So Cape Hatteras Secondary School decided to adapt with a senior car parade.
Senior students convened at the southern tip of the island, and then loaded into their cars and headed north in a caravan. Parents, teachers, and the local community were able to cheer them on along the roadside, and senior portraits of the entire graduating class lined the road in front of the secondary school.
The parade carrying the graduating class of 42 students cruised the length of the island, ending at the northernmost village of Rodanthe, providing the students with a unique and memorable show of appreciation. Congratulations, Class of 2020!
Great that the grads were upheld and applauded by the community. But from my view point, might as well have had a graduation ceremony instead. There was hardly any social distancing by either the adults or the students nor was anyone wearing a mask.
