N.C. Highway 12 Will Remain Closed Until Weather Conditions Improve
Due to the hazardous conditions currently affecting clearing operations of N.C. Highway 12, and given the forecast is calling for similar weather conditions overnight, N.C. Highway 12 from Oregon Inlet to Rodanthe will remain closed until weather conditions provide for safe and productive clearing efforts, per a 3:00 p.m. update from Dare County officials.
Limited visibility, severe ocean overwash, and continued blown sand on the roadway have contributed to the unsafe conditions NCDOT crews are experiencing. Ocean overwash is expected to affect N.C 12 again tonight and possibly tomorrow with tides and wind forecast to diminish by sometime midday Monday.
N.C. 12 will remain closed Sunday, and state transportation officials will reassess road conditions tomorrow and begin clearing and any possible repair work required to reopen the road. Per a Sunday afternoon update from drivenc.gov, N.C. Highway 12 is expected to reopen by 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 19.
NCDOT clearing efforts will resume once weather conditions improve to allow for safe operations.
