A dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Monday at the new Dare MedFlight Hangar/EMS Station at the Dare County Regional Airport on Roanoke Island.

Located at 1078 Driftwood Drive in Manteo, the 14,320-square-foot facility includes a hangar for the medical helicopter, an area to work on repairs including a paint booth, onsite sleeping quarters, workspaces, workout room, and kitchen/lounge for crew members.

It replaces a separate hangar, crew quarters, and support facilities scattered around the airport area that have been in use since the 1970s.

Dare MedFlight is the only medical helicopter that is owned and operated by a county government in North Carolina, and is one of only a few in the United States.

The new hangar is part of a multi-phase project to improve and modernize outdated Dare County EMS facilities throughout the county in order to better serve the residents and visitors of our community.

Along with the hangar, Phase One includes a new EMS Station 1 which is co-located with a new Kill Devil Hills Fire Station and is scheduled to open later this summer, and EMS Station 4 in Southern Shores that was dedicated in April, at a total cost of approximately $42.9 million.
