North Carolina King Tides Project wants your photos of this weekend’s extreme tides
A king tide event is expected to occur through next Tuesday, November 9, and organizers of the North Carolina King Tides Project are asking the public to submit their photos of the potentially extreme weather in the coming days.
The King Tides Project is a global initiative to document extreme high tide events using photos, to help visualize how “normal” high tides could look in the future due to sea-level rise.
In addition, photos from the public help the North Carolina King Tides Project better understand storm, tidal, and wind-driven flooding in a given area, which in turn helps to inform community planning, and estimate future vulnerabilities to high water levels.
A “king tide” is a non-scientific term used to describe the predicted highest high-tide and lowest low-tide events of the year.
King tides are regular and predictable events that occur when the sun, Earth, and moon are in alignment, and the moon is at its closest point to the Earth.
The upcoming November king tide is also corresponding with extreme weather forecast for this weekend, including strong and continuous N/NE winds which could lead to ocean overwash and coastal flooding, per a recent update from the National Weather Service.
“Over the next several days, please document what you are seeing by submitting your photos to the NC King Tide project using the Coastal Observer app,” stated the emailed request from the North Carolina King Tides Project. “Remember, personal safety should always be top priority when taking photos or videos.”
