Services back after hours-long outage on Hatteras

Share post:

Large parts of Hatteras Island were without cell, internet and cable TV service from mid-morning till mid-afternoon on Thursday, Feb. 27 after a damaged cable triggered the outage.

Several sources on Hatteras told the Voice of a strange feeling of isolation with services down, communication restricted and emergency radios pressed into action. Dare County Commissioner Danny Couch, who represents Hatteras, said “everything was out from 10:30 to about 2:30. Someone cut a fiber optic cable all the way up in Rodanthe, so other than a few houses in Mirlo Beach, there was nothing all down the island.”

The Voice was unable to get a comment from a Charter spokesperson by deadline. But Courtney Morton, a senior communications manager for CenturyLink, emailed a statement saying, that, “On February 27, some customers on Hatteras Island experienced service disruptions due to a third-party fiber cut. All services are restored. At CenturyLink, we are committed to providing reliable services. We apologize for the impact to our customers.”
