Soundside flooding reported in multiple locations on Hatteras Island

Soundside flooding was reported in multiple locations along Hatteras Island on Wednesday morning, January 10, affecting side roads and N.C. Highway 12 in several spots.

Flooding was reported in the Tri-Villages, Avon, Frisco, and Hatteras Village, with sound waters affecting N.C. Highway 12 in northern Avon and the Tri-Villages, particularly in Salvo. Travelers can avoid some of the flooded Salvo area by turning onto Colony Drive and/or Rampart Street.

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office released the following road conditions report for Hatteras Island at 8:39 a.m.

• There is water covering the road north of the Jug Handle Bridge, and there is a couple of inches of water covering the road near New Inlet Bridge.
• In Salvo and Waves, up to 4 inches of sound water is coming across N.C. Highway 12.
• Sound water is also coming up to the traffic light at Avon Village, and in northern Avon, adjacent to the Hatteras Colony neighborhood.

N.C. Highway 12 is also closed north of the NPS Pony Pens on Ocracoke Island due to ocean overwash that occurred on Wednesday morning. The highway is open throughout Hatteras Island, but in addition to soundside flooding, there is a layer of blown sand on the roadway and several areas of standing rainwater, especially on Pea Island.

All Ocracoke Island ferry operations remain suspended as of Wednesday morning. To get notified of ferry delays or cancellations, sign up for text and/or email alerts via the N.C. Ferry System’s FINS system: www.ncdot.gov/fins.

School has been canceled for Wednesday, January 10, for all Dare County students.

While the threat of rain and thunderstorms has passed, windy conditions will continue this morning with gusts up to 45-50 mph still possible across the Outer Banks until noon. A Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, and the public can keep tabs on soundside water levels through www.FIMAN.NC.gov.
