Trump, Biden win primaries in N.C.; House, Hanig win local Republican primaries
Though many area residents took advantage of early voting at the Fessenden Center in Buxton, March 3 officially marked Primary Day in Dare and Hyde Counties.
Election results came in late Tuesday night for North Carolina, and there were few surprises and a number of incumbent wins for both parties on a county and statewide level
Republican Results
On the Republican side, incumbent Commissioner Steve House beat Kitty Hawk resident Paul Wright for the Dare County Board of Commissioners District 3 seat with 1,815 votes (60.82%) to 1,169 votes, while incumbent Rep. Bobby Hanig beat challenger Rob Rollason for the N.C. House District 6 seat with 6,122 (70.78%) votes to 2,527 votes.
Also on the state level, Dan Forest beat Holly Grange as the Republican candidate for N.C. Governor, while incumbent Thom Tillis beat three candidates, (Paul Wright, Larry Holmquist, and Sharon Y. Hudson), as the GOP’s U.S. Senate candidate.
In North Carolina, President Donald Trump easily beat Joe Walsh and Bill Weld as by a hefty margin, with 93.52% of N.C. votes.
Democrat Results
Though there were no primary contests for Democratic candidates for the Dare County Board of Commissioners, there were several statewide contests on the primary ballot.
Governor Roy Cooper beat challenger Ernest T. Reeves as the Democratic candidate for governor, while Cal Cunningham beat a field of contenders, (Steve Swenson, Erica D. Smith, Trevor M. Fuller and Atul Goel), as the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate general election.
Joe Biden beat a large field of Democratic Presidential candidates, garnering 42.99% of N.C. votes. Bernie Sanders came in second with 24.10%, while Michael R. Bloomberg had 12.99% and Elizabeth Warren had 10.47%.
General Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2020.
