UPDATE: Three fatalities confirmed after Monday traffic accident on Pea Island
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 14 UPDATE:
A third person has died from injuries sustained in a traffic accident that occurred on Monday near the Pea Island Visitors Center. Elizabeth Sadler of Blackridge, Virginia, died on June 13 at the Norfolk General Hospital. A second passenger remains in critical condition at the Norfolk Hospital, while two other passengers are in stable or fair condition at area hospitals, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
TUESDAY, JUNE 13, UPDATE:
A two-vehicle crash on Monday that involved six people resulted in two fatalities, with the other four passengers currently at area hospitals in Virginia and the Outer Banks.
The deceased have been identified as Elijah Midgette of Rodanthe, and Carolyn Elmore of Bracey, VA. Per an update from the Outer Banks Voice, Midgette was operating a Blue Dodge Caravan with no other passengers, while Elmore was driving a Burgundy Chevy Suburban with four other passengers, when the Caravan traveled left of center into the Suburban’s lane.
The accident took place at the curve of N.C. Highway 12 near the Pea Island Visitors Center. Midgette was pronounced dead at the scene while Elmore was declared deceased after being transported to The Outer Banks Hospital.
At the time of the accident, one passenger was airlifted to the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, and two others were transported by Dare County ambulance to the Norfolk hospital. The fourth passenger was transported to the Outer Banks Hospital.
Of the four passengers in the vehicle with Elmore, one was in stable condition at The Outer Banks Hospital as of Tuesday, and the three other passengers were in critical condition at the Norfolk General Hospital.
Multiple emergency vehicles and agencies responded to the accident, including the Dare County Sheriff’s Office, National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Chicamacomico Banks Fire and Rescue, Nags Head Fire Department, and Dare Emergency Medical Services.
N.C. Highway 12 was temporarily closed between Rodanthe and the Marc Basnight Bridge due to the accident. The highway closed at approximately 11:20 a.m. and reopened at 1:45 p.m. on Monday.
