Worker fatally injured at ‘Jug Handle Bridge’ project on Hatteras Island
A worker on the ‘Jug Handle Bridge’ project in Rodanthe was fatally injured Monday morning.
Work at the project on Hatteras Island has been stopped while an investigation is underway, said Michael Swenson, spokesman for Flatiron Corp., the main contractor on the project.
The worker killed was a Flatiron employee, Swenson said. No details have been released on the nature of the incident
“Our thoughts are with our employee’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time, Swenson said. “Out of respect for the family, we are not releasing the employee’s name.”
The $145 million bridge will carry N.C. 12 over the Pamlico Sound, bypassing the rapidly eroding S-Turns and Mirlo Beach areas. It is scheduled to open by the fall of 2021.
