2019 Avon Farmers Market May Be Biggest Yet
The start of the weekly summertime farmers market in Avon is just around the corner, and 2019 is shaping up to be one of the biggest years yet, with 65 different vendors already on the books for the season.
Held every Tuesday morning from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. beginning on June 18, this year’s market will include a large number of longtime regulars – such as C and J Produce of Rodanthe – as well as some new artisans and vendors for locals and visitors to discover.
“We have about 15 new vendors for 2019,” says Market Manager Susan Meyers, “and it’s going to be a very diverse year for sure.”
In 2018, the market had a maximum of 60 vendors signed up for the season, with an average of 40 vendors attending and selling their wares every Tuesday morning. With several weeks to go before the official first market on June 18, (and 65 vendors lined up), Meyers reports that there is still time and opportunities for the market to grow even more.
“Our farmers market keeps growing, and we’re always happy to get great vendors – whether it’s food or art or something different,” says Meyers.
There are some additional enhancements and changes on the horizon for the 2019 season as well.
For one thing, the site of the market, (which is adjacent to the Avon Beach Klub), has been expanded thanks to off-season grading. “It’s flatter, and there’s more room, so we’ll be able to extend and add vendors on both sides of the [property],” says Meyers.
For another, Stu’s Donuts of Avon will be stationing their popular food truck on the property, so that patrons can load up on gourmet hot dogs, BBQ, and other local fare. “There’s also going to be homemade scones, pastries, and coffee at the market, so folks can get breakfast or lunch while they shop,” says Meyers.
The market is continually a mixture of local artists, craftsmen, produce vendors, bakers, and other small-scale entrepreneurs who specialize in goodies that can’t be found anywhere else. Combined with a central Avon location, the convenience and wide variety of vendors has resulted in a well-attended market that grows more popular with every year.
Originally established in 2010 in Buxton, and eventually finding its permanent home next to the Avon Beach Klub and Pangea Tavern, the Avon Farmers Market has become a weekly tradition for locals and visitors alike, as it continues to perpetually grow each season.
“We’re excited to keep growing, and we appreciate the local island community for supporting this market,” says Meyers. “We have locals coming every week, and the island community is what has made the market a success.”
