Fiber cut in Nags Head to blame for Spectrum outage on Hatteras, Ocracoke
A fiber optic cable was damaged Tuesday morning in Nags Head, knocking out services to Spectrum internet customers on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands.
The outage started around 8:15 a.m. for customers of the internet service provided by Charter Communications.
The damage appears to have happened at Whalebone Junction, where a project began Monday to replace pipes running under U.S. 158 and N.C. 12.
Images from a N.C. Department of Transportation camera located north of the intersection show a truck and trailer owned by a company that specializes in fiber optic cable splicing and repairs inside the work zone.
Some Hatteras Island customers said their internet was restored around 2:10 p.m. Officials from Charter have not confirmed the cause of the outage.
A similar incident happened in February 2023, when workers replacing a pipe under U.S. 158 at the Nags Head Town Hall damaged a cable that took down a number of cellular and data services on Hatteras and Ocracoke.
Tuesday’s outage primarily impacted Spectrum internet customers, according to reports from the islands.
It’s 9am Thursday morning, internet is down again!
Maybe it asking to much for the highway crew to have a higher then room temperature IQ!
There is Zero excuse for this.
