Cancer Foundation’s annual dance was just the ‘bee’s knees’
The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation’s annual Spring Dance this year was not only the bee’s knees, it was the berries. The Cat’s Meow. And just swell.
About 150 gals and their daddies showed up to enjoy Saturday evening, April 11, in Roaring Twenties style while raising money to help Hatteras Island cancer patients.
Cancer Foundation board members and volunteers remade the Hatteras Civic Center into a scene reminiscent of an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. The joint was decked out with wall hangings that evoked “The Great Gatsby,” while tables were covered with shimmering cloths and adorned with candelabras and tall black vases with black and white feathers.
Most of the guests came dolled up for the evening. Women were dressed in the best flapper styles with straight, short, dropped-waist dresses lots of beads, hats, headbands, and feather boas. These dames were nothing if not really ritzy and swanky.
Their dappers were spiffy, whether in gangster garb or tuxes with ties, vests, hats, or suspenders.
The back, storage room was emptied out and became the speakeasy for the evening, where the guests could enjoy just a little hooch. It was decorated with old whiskey bottles, crates, barrels, and a mural of bottles and glasses as they would appear behind the bar, painted by local artist Trish Dempsey.
Elegant tables in the room were spread with a buffet that included such culinary delights as avocado deviled eggs, fresh tuna salad wraps, Thai-glazed chicken skewers, jerk grilled shrimp, spinach pasta, meatballs and stuffed mushroom, oysters Rockefeller, and Greek roasted pork tenderloin — all donated by island restaurants or businesses. Desserts were cupcakes from Scratch Made Snackery in Hatteras village, fudge from the Scotch Bonnet, and pound cake bites to dip in chocolate, caramel or whipped cream.
It was, for sure, a copacetic evening that hit on all sixes!
“Thanks to the all those in the community who attended, donated food, money or your time,” said Cancer Foundation president, Sydnee Slaughter. “We couldn’t do it without you. It takes an island!
