Skies Darken in Buxton Due to Storm Damage to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
The skies over Buxton were a little darker over the weekend, as the light of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse stopped functioning due to damage from the recent wave of winter storms.
Though it was not clear which storm caused the lighting issue, (whether it was the early January storm or the recent thunderstorms on Friday), the damage was reported by the weekend to the National Park Service and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Though the lighthouse itself is managed by the National Park Service, the light within the structure is maintained by the Coast Guard, which is responsible for the repairs.
The Aids to Navigation Teams in Wanchese reported that an Electrician Mate was sent to the site over the weekend, and found a short in the system. Parts have been ordered to make the repair, however there is not yet a timeframe of when the repair will be complete.
The Island Free press will post updates on the repair timeline as soon as they are available.
