National Seashore Updates for the Week of June 20
The Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS) announced several recent updates and news items related to recreational activities and seashore conditions on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands.
News items and events related to the National Seashore for the week of June 20 include the following:
Seashore Updates
- On June 17, 1999, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse began its 2,900’ move to the southwest, saving it from the encroaching Atlantic Ocean. The relocation of the lighthouse took 23 days. Superintendent Hallac and staff hope many visitors are able to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the lighthouse move at a special event on July 1st. The celebration event includes free lighthouse climbs throughout the day. More details are listed below in the special events section.
- The Seashore is seeking public input regarding a proposal from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Ferry Division. NCDOT is requesting structural shoreline protection measures to mitigate for severe erosion causing damage to the ferry basin bulkhead and stacking lanes along the north end terminus of Ocracoke Island. See https://islandfreepress.org/outer-banks-driving-on-the-beach/public-input-requested-on-proposed-protection-measures-for-ocracoke-ferry-site/ for more details, including how to submit public comments.
- Planning ahead and staying informed can often help ensure a fun and safe trip for all. View the Seashore’s safety page at http://go.nps.gov/cahasafety.
- You can now view the Oregon Inlet Marina, Oregon Inlet Campground, and Marc Basnight Bridge from the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center’s new webcam.
- A protection buffer remains in place at Cape Point to protect American oystercatcher and least tern chicks, as well as nesting black skimmers. There are also multiple piping plover chicks and over 50 least tern chicks in the Cape Point area.
- ORVs and pedestrians can currently travel 0.61 miles south of ORV Ramp 44. Only the last quarter mile of the Ramp 44 beach route is within the protection buffer.
- Staff continue to monitor the Cape Point area. Once nesting activity has concluded, the protection buffer at Cape Point will be removed.
- Visitors can sign up for beach safety text messages by texting “Join OBXBeachConditions” to 30890.
