The Dare County Board of Commissioners (BOC) covered a number of Outer Banks-related issues and achievements at their September 17 meeting in Manteo.
Topics which pertained to the island and / or the local community included the following:
Chairman Provides Overview of Hurricane Florence
Chairman Woodard provided a comprehensive review of Dare County’s preparation and action related to Hurricane Florence. He explained that the mandatory evacuation ordered by the Dare County Control Group was done in order to protect public safety based on information from the National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center as the hurricane was approaching the Carolina coast in an uncertain track as a possible category 4 storm. The Chairman recapped the meetings that were held by the Control Group, which consists of the Dare County Chairman, each of the six municipal Mayors, the National Park Superintendent, and Sheriff Doughtie. A report was given on the strategic mobilization of equipment by NCDOT and the steps that were taken by EMS, the Sheriff’s Office, Health & Human Services, and other County Departments to safeguard public safety before and during the storm. Commissioners joined the Chairman in voicing concern for the people in the areas of North and South Carolina that were hard hit by Hurricane Florence and expressed gratitude that Dare County did not sustain a direct hit from this storm.
September Declared World Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month
Commissioners proclaimed September World Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month to raise awareness in our community about Alzheimer’s Disease and the need for research, educational programs, and caregiver services.
Financing of Equipment Awarded to The Bancorp Bank
After receiving bids from eight financial institutions for the financing of $1.266 million of equipment included in this year’s Capital Improvements Plan, the Board awarded the four year financing to The Bancorp Bank which submitted the lowest cost proposal at a rate of 2.65%.
Guernsey Tingle Architects Selected for Dare County Animal Shelter
Following the recommendation from the selection committee that reviewed and evaluated proposals from five architects, the Board of Commissioners selected Guernsey Tingle of Williamsburg, Virginia for the design of the new Dare County Animal Shelter and authorized the County Manager to negotiate a contract with the firm to be brought back to the Board for approval. This recommendation of Guernsey Tingle was made due to the company’s experience working with animal care centers over many years and their partnership with Pace Collaborative and Kim Hamby who have worked on other projects in Dare County and have an understanding of the unique challenges.
