Ocracoke slowing down; dredge still there
The North Carolina Department of Transportation has closed Highway 12 until further after an employee was killed in a fatal accident in a work zone. The name of the employee is being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.
The accident occurred south of the Bonner Bridge in an area where crews were working to remove sand in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and the recent northeaster that hit the Outer Banks.
The highway had been closed since it was damaged by the hurricane, and had just been reopened at noon yesterday to four-wheel-drive vehicles only.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol and NCDOT officials are investigating the accident. Highway 12 will remain closed pending the outcome of the investigation.
