Though postponed by a day due to weather, the annual 2023 Hatteras Village Golf Cart Parade was another big success, according to parade organizers, with approximately 50 entries attending the July 5 event.

The yearly event began in 2013 as a fundraiser for the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation and attracted less than a dozen carts that were decked out in patriotic themes. Once it became clear that the parade garnered interest among locals and visitors alike, the event became an annual celebration, with more and more folks participating with golf carts of all varieties.

“Although we lost a few entries by having to reschedule the event, we still had almost 50 entries, and those that were able to make it did not disappoint,” said organizer Karla Jarvis. “This year, the carts were more decked out than I think they have ever been.”

There were the usual patriotic themes in this year’s parade, and a few quite humorous ones as well. The judges had to make some tough calls, but in the end, the three winners this year were:

  • Most Humorous (Michele Whitaker, organizer): “I Caught Crabs,” a cart decorated to look like a crab pot with crabs all over and a buoy on top.
  • Most Creative (Avery Garris, organizer): RIP Frisco Spaceship, a cart decorated like the silver spaceship house that unfortunately burned down last fall, full of “aliens” dressed in green suits.
  • Most Patriotic: Chrissie Groven and crew took the prize this year with their cart decked out in the finest patriotic red, white, and blue!
