Coast Guard assists disabled sportfisher through Oregon Inlet
Coast Guard crews assisted a sportfishing boat with navigating Oregon Inlet after they lost an engine while trying to transit the ocean bar.
According to a post on theĀ Oregon Inlet Station’s Facebook page, the 60-foot On Time from Morehead City requested assistance due to having only one functioning engine.
With a 4-to-6 foot swell breaking on the sandbar outside the inlet, even the most experienced watermen can run into trouble, especially when mechanical issues strike.
“Our lifeboat crew launched, towed them inshore to safer water and passed the tow off to local commercial salvage to get to safe harbor in Wanchese,” USCG Station Oregon Inlet said.
“This case serves as a reminder (that) the outcome could have been drastically different had the captain of this vessel not asked for help,” the Coast Guard said.
