Coastal Flood Watch issued for the Outer Banks; Ocean overwash and flooding possible again next week
A strong coastal low will strengthen off the Mid-Atlantic coast on Monday, bringing several coastal impacts through the middle of the week, per an update from the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office.
Minor to moderate coastal flooding is likely for oceanside and soundside locations, and in particular, areas vulnerable to strong northerly winds.
Water levels 2-4 ft above ground level (agl) will be possible for oceanside locations from Duck to Ocracoke through Tuesday, while 1-3 feet agl flooding will be possible for properties adjacent to the southern Pamlico Sound.
Rough surf and minor beach erosion are expected, with ocean overwash possible on portions of N.C. Highway 12 where dune structures are vulnerable. High astronomical tides and already-high water levels from Hurricane Ian will likely exacerbate the situation.
A Coastal Flood Watch has been issued for Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands from 8:00 a.m. on Monday until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, and residents and visitors in low-lying areas should monitor forecasts closely for the next several days.
