How to explore Hatteras Village during the detour

On Monday, October 7, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) began a roughly seven-month-long project to replace the aging Slash Creek Bridge on N.C. Highway 12 in Hatteras Village.

The $4.5 million project will replace the existing 68-year-old wooden structure with a two-span cored slab bridge, and while work proceeds, a detour is in place along Eagle Pass Road.

This detour runs parallel to N.C. Highway 12, but bypasses the heart of historic and explore-worthy Hatteras Village. As such, new Hatteras and Ocracoke Island visitors may accidentally bypass central Hatteras Village and will miss out on a treasure trove of attractions, shops, restaurants, and much more as a result.

Luckily, all these Hatteras Village attractions and businesses can be easily accessed with just a 1-2 minute deviation from the Eagle Pass Road detour route.

Directions to businesses and attractions south of Slash Creek Bridge

For Hatteras Island travelers heading south, take the Eagle Pass Road detour and then turn right on N.C. Highway 12 towards the heart of Hatteras Village to access these establishments.
For travelers heading north from Ocracoke, bypass the Eagle Pass Road detour and go straight on N.C. Highway 12 into the heart of the village.
