Island Projects Continue amid COVID-19 Closures…with Video
The COVID-19 pandemic seems to have stopped the world in its tracks and Hatteras Island is no different. The quarantine measures introduced by the state government have closed businesses and halted tourism indefinitely.
Fortunately during this uncertain time there are many projects on the islands that are still moving forward. Here’s a rundown of island infrastructure projects that are still active.
Special Thanks to Jarvis Towing for Pictures of Ocracoke
Time to open up the Island and get back to work.
The island is open, and many of us are able to work.
The island is not open and an economy based off of tourism is doubtfully able to sustain any long term work. OBX is far from a self sustainable economy and if these politicians continue to act this way they will isolate the very people who pay their salaries.
“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”
Yes, the island is open. Nags Head and those towns are not an island but a peninsula of the Virginia mainland. Again open for all residents.
Tourism is killing this place, we need to tone it down if we are to survive.
Great idea, you should run for mayor or the board and see how many of the Dare county voters share your sentiment…
Much of Dare county agrees
I doubt that very much. The state would never invest this much in Dare infrastructure if it wasn’t for the taxes provided by the tourism industry. From what I’ve heard from many of the NRPOs who’ve spoken with Dare county residents, your viewpoint is the minority. Prove me wrong, run for local office.
The island was only closed for a few days from over wash.
As there is no vaccine and people keep dying, “open the economy” means send more low income workers back to work. Send anyone who doesn’t have much choice in the matter back to work. FOR THE ECONOMY.
The curve is flattening, vaccine won’t be ready for 12-18 months, the ability to distribute a vaccine, even longer. How would you like to combat 20% unemployment, the loss of people’s livelihoods and their ability to pay for medical care and essentials (food, shelter, etc)? Covid mortality rate is estimated at 0.66% according to CNN. Do you thinking tanking the world economy isn’t going to result in higher deaths because of the higher rates of poverty? Plenty of literature out there showing the parallels of life expectancy as it relates to income…
And that’s if you catch it. 328 million Americans and 650,000 have it. 0.2% of Americans have/had covid, most of which have already recovered.
In the meantime, enjoy the beaches and sounds. It has been so very nice on the beach, and the waves have been good too.
Planning to check on it very soon. Spending money locally, not likely. Very passive aggressive there Buddy.
Oliver, STOP…Buddy is a nut that just looks for someone that will argue with him…best to leave him to his misery…
Sure Larry, it is miserable without the dangerous hoards. Ha
Larry,
I know. Thank you. The reasons for my posts have never been to influence Buddy’s opinion. I recognize that he’s either too ignorant or stubborn to change or even slightly modify his opinion. The purpose has always been to provide a counter argument so that the others who read these posts have the opportunity to see the other sides argument, doubtful it’d make a huge impact but I’m quarantined and bored.
No quarantine here, sunshine blue skies and sand between our toes. Life is good on Hatteras.
