Severe thunderstorms, high winds possible starting Wednesday afternoon
High winds and severe thunderstorms are possible along the Outer Banks ahead of a strong cold front, per a Wednesday morning update from the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office.
Severe Thunderstorms
Scattered and severe thunderstorms are possible starting Wednesday evening until around midnight, and the primary threat from the storms will be damaging wind gusts, isolated tornadoes, and heavy downpours.
High Winds
South winds of 25-35 mph with gusts up to 45-50 mph are expected on Wednesday, with peak winds occurring on Wednesday evening. Residents are advised to use caution when driving, and secure outdoor objects.
A Wind Advisory has been issued for Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, and a Gale Warning is in effect for coastal waters south of Oregon Inlet and the Pamlico Sound. A Small Craft Advisory has also been issued for remaining marine zones.
