Hatteras Island Real Estate:
A statistical profile of the island

By TOM HRANICKA

For quite some time, I have had it in the back of my mind to develop a statistical profile of Hatteras Island. What follows is the first iteration of what I hope will be an ongoing project to document the various dimensions that define the island.

GENERAL

  • Hatteras Island is a barrier island located approximately 30 miles east of the North Carolina mainland.
  • It is part of an area that is known as the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
  • The island is accessed via the 2.7 mile long Herbert C. Bonner Bridge across Oregon Inlet south of the town of Nags Head.
  • About 63 percent of the island is within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service and the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge  under the stewardship of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. These areas remain in their natural states and are protected from development.
  • Hatteras Island is about 50 miles in length and varies in width from a few hundred yards to around 3 miles at it widest point.
  • There is only one main road on the island – N.C. Highway 12.
