HATTERAS- William Howard Rooney, Jr., 76, died Feb. 16, 2012 athis home. He was the son of William Howard and Jean StephensonRooney of Alexandria, Va. Howard, as he was know by family and friends,graduated from St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in 1953 and Virginia Techin 1957.
Howard is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Charlotte BarlowRooney, and daughter Karen Rooney Noonan, son-in-law John Noonan, andgranddaughter Eve Noonan of Virginia Beach, Va.
He worked on the family wheat farm in the summers. Howard servedhonorably in the U.S. Army in Germany after college. He enjoyedreconstructing a ’39 four-door Ford convertible in his teens andenjoyed managing an auto-related business and a bicycle businessin married life. After retirement, he relocated to Hatteras wherehe served The Anglers Club as treasurer for nine years, enjoyed theloving friendships from the Hatteras United Methodist Church, andserved in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 1604 from itsinception until his death.
A memorial service will be held at the United Hatteras Methodist Churchon Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorialgifts may be made to Hatteras United Methodist Church Building Fund, POBox 310, Hatteras, NC 27943 or to the Salvation Army, PO Box1967, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.
