AVON — Retta Meekins Gray, 91, passed intoeternity on April 25, 2012. She was born to Calvin and Maggie Meekinson Dec. 20, 1920. She was an active member of St. John’s UnitedMethodist Church in Avon, where she served as a trustee, treasurer,past president of the United Methodist Women, taught Sunday School andserved in the choir for many years. She was past Worthy Matron of theCape Hatteras Eastern Star.
She was predeceased by her husband, Elwood C. Gray; her stepmother,Dorcas Meekins; her grandson, Kelly Lee Willis; her son-in-law, OtisWillis Jr., and her brother, Archie Meekins.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Brenda Willis, Carol Riggs(and husband Mack), and E. Crouse Gray Jr. (and wife Juanita);grandchildren, Brenda Jo VanOverberghe (husband Gary), Roger ScottRiggs, and Jennifer Allen; great-grandchildren, Cristi VanOverberghe,Samantha VanOverberghe, Desarae Allen, Samantha Allen, Amanda Allen,Raymond Allen IV, and Jaden Bailey her brothers and sisters, AlstonMeekins, Rex Meekins (wife Joanne), June Jeannette, and Mary Douglas;special niece and nephew, Gail, Jim, and Shane Coleman; adoptedgreat-grandchildren, Aaron Daniel, Megan Daniel, Cory Daniel, KylerBailey, Daelyn Bailey, Carly Bailey, and Patrick Bailey, and manyrelatives and friends.
Visitation will be at her home, 40296 McMullen Road in Avon from 5until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2. The graveside service will be held atthe Gray Cemetery in Buxton (next to Conner’s Supermarket) at 10 a.m.on Thursday, May 3. Funeral services will be at a later date when St.John’s UMC renovations are completed. Pastor Roger Dill will officiate.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John’s UnitedMethodist Church, P.O. Box 129, Avon, NC 27915.
The family would like to thank the staff at Outer Banks Hospital,especially the ER staff and the staff on POD A 2nd floor for theirkindness. She will be forever loved and missed.
