NAGS HEAD — It is with great sadness we announce Albert C. Ellington III, or as most knew him, ACE, passed away at his home on August 17, 2023, at the age of 81. Albert lived a life filled with dedication, service and unwavering commitment.
He was born in Richmond, VA on October 20, 1941, the son of the late Annie and Albert. C. Ellington II. Their memory, along with Albert’s own, will be forever cherished by those who knew and loved him. He is survived by two children. His son, Kenneth Ellington and daughter, Gerri Ellington of Manteo and his only grandchild, Kanan Keller of Manteo, who will forever carry his memory. He also leaves a sister, Wendy Mingus of Chester, VA, who will miss him dearly. Albert was preceded in death by his siblings, Wayne Ellington, Robert Ellington, David Ellington and Elizabeth Stell.
Albert proudly served his country as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. During that time, he held Embassy Duty at the US Embassy in the Philippines, Laos and Cambodia.
Following his military service, Albert embarked on a fulfilling career in law enforcement as a deputy in the Chesterfield County VA Sheriff’s Department, and was known for his strong work ethic and dedication to justice. After many years of dedicated service, he retired and found a new way of life on the Outer Banks.
ACE was a frequent to many local establishments throughout the years, but most notably, you would find him at Fish Heads, Sam & Omies and The Lost Colony Tavern, where he made many friends and memories with the owners and staff. He enjoyed a cold beverage, listening to great music, singing karaoke and sparking conversations with locals and tourists. ACE truly loved his time here on the Outer Banks.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at 11:00 am at Roanoke Island Baptist Church in Manteo, NC, with Pastor Scott Baxley. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date and ACE will have his final resting place at Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA.
In honoring ACE’s memory, the family kindly requests, that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org). This organization, close to ACE’s heart, supports wounded veterans and offers vital assistance to those who bravely served their country.
As we bid farewell to ACE, we remember the indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication to his family, friends and country that defined his life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his memory will forever be treasured. May he rest in peace.
