July 3, 1934 – July 2, 2022
MANTEO — Mrs. Carolyn “Piggy” Gaskill Basnight, 87, of Manteo, NC passed peacefully early Saturday morning, July 2, 2022, at the home that she raised her boys in, surrounded in love by her family.
A native of Dare County, she was born July 3, 1934, to the late Laura Davis Gaskill and James Gaskill, in her family home in Wanchese. She grew up there with her siblings, James Lee Gaskill, Grady Gaskill, Tena Gaskill Sawyer, and Linda Gaskill Mann.
Mrs. Carolyn was active in her church, Bethany United Methodist Church in Wanchese, from the time she was born. She attended almost every Sunday, and also sang in the choir. She was well-known for her talents as a baker. She started baking with her mother and sisters when she was a young girl. Her most popular cake was The 14 Layer Chocolate Cake. There was always a lot of love poured into her cakes, which set them apart from the rest! Her desserts were featured at five local restaurants that she delivered to for many years, as well as her many, many personal customers from all over the east coast. Mrs. Carolyn also previously worked as a Kindergarten teacher’s aide at Manteo Elementary School, where she enjoyed serving the community and loving on the children.
Piggy had a heart of gold, loved the Lord, her family, her dear friends that met every Tuesday night at TL’s, her church family, and of course, her best friend and husband, Steve Jr.
She is survived by her two sons, Stephen G. Basnight III (Ashley) and Hugh T. Basnight (Vanessa); six grandchildren, Josh, Cole, Sara, Anna, Andrew, and Rebecca; and nine great-grandchildren. Also, surviving are her sister, Linda Gaskill Mann; and her brother, Grady Gaskill (Amanda).
In addition to her parents, Piggy was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Stephen Gaylord Basnight, Jr.; her sister, Tena Gaskill Sawyer; and her brother, James Lee Gaskill.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, July 7, 2022, at Bethany United Methodist Church. Private burial will take place in Manteo Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 800 pm at Twiford Colony Chapel.
