New beach access parking area opens north of Buxton
A new 16-car parking area has opened along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS) just north of Buxton, and close to a stretch of oceanside shoreline that is popular with surfers and beachgoers.
The clay and shell-based parking area, (which is adjacent to soundside ORV Ramp #60), was constructed by DOT Construction, Inc., which tackled a similar project on Bodie Island in 2023.
Construction of the new Buxton parking area began in early 2024, and the parking area opened to the public on Thursday, March 7.
“The parking area provides a safer experience for Seashore visitors along a stretch of N.C. Highway 12 that is popular for both soundside and oceanside recreational activities,” stated CHNS in a March 7 update.
For a complete list of parking areas and ORV ramps, including current beach conditions, visit the CHNS website at https://www.nps.gov/caha/planyourvisit/conditions.htm.
I think this is great but safe is questionable? Will there be a crosswalk on HWY12 and a sign? It is also right when the speed limit is 45 and 55 in season. Walking safely across HWY12 on HI is challenging. The speed limit should be adjusted and the signage. This also should be added to the beach access at the Haulover parking lot.
