Severe Weather Preparedness Week in
North Carolina Announced for March 5 – 11
The NOAA’s National Weather Service office in Newport has announced that next week, March 5 – 11, will be Severe Weather Preparedness week in North Carolina. During this week, information will be presented and discussed on a wide array of weather emergency situations, and a statewide tornado drill will also be held across the state.
The initiative is part of NOAA’s National Weather Service “WeatherReady” Nation vision, which includes a goal of increasing partnerships and redoubling their efforts in public outreach and education for all kinds of severe weather. NOAA reports that with warmer weather arriving, now is the best time to review the dangerous weather conditions that the spring and summer seasons can bring.
The goal of this week is to help people in North Carolina learn more about the dangers of thunderstorms, tornadoes, and flooding, per a National Weather Service press release. It is also a time for emergency management, public and private planning officials, and residents to review their own preparedness plans, and understand what to do during a weather emergency or disaster.
The tornado drill will be held on Wednesday March 8 at 9:30 a.m., and anyone and everyone is encouraged to participate, as consistent practice during periods of quiet weather allows people to respond quickly in the event of a real life severe weather emergency.
Information on the drill itself can be found on the Severe Weather Awareness Week Website at http://www.weather.gov/rah/2017ncswpw.
Beginning Sunday, the National Weather Service will also begin to send out preparedness information in various forms. A sneak preview of the text based information is listed below (Daily Topics), which will be sent out via a Public Information Statement (PNS).
The public is invited to follow the Morehead City National Weather Service office on social media for more graphic based information, via their Facebook and Twitter accounts at https://www.facebook.com/NWSMoreheadCity/ and https://twitter.com/nwsmoreheadcity.
