Child injured on Ocracoke in unconfirmed shark attack
A 5-year-old girl was airlifted off Ocracoke today in what may have been a shark attack in the ocean near South Point.
Shortly after 5 p.m., on Tuesday, July 19, Hyde County Emergency Medical Services, National Park Service, and Ocracoke Fire Department responded to a call at Ramp 72 for a shark bite. Bystanders described what appeared to be a shark attacking a child, according to Hyde County Deputy Emergency Services Director Brian Carter.
Carter stated that the youngster was flown via East Care to an area hospital and the patient’s condition is unknown at this time.
Hyde County spokeswoman Jamie Tunnell said the call came in as a shark attack but that it was unconfirmed.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore law enforcement rangers did not immediately return calls for more details.
Island Free Press will report more details as they become available.
