Sheriff’s Office needs help identifying suspects in school break-in
The Dare County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public’s help in identifying suspects in a breaking and entering incident at Cape Hatteras Secondary School in Buxton on the night of Wednesday, Aug. 6.
According to Sgt. Doug Oberbeck, six persons were observed on security videotape while breaking into buses and a building at about 10:30 p.m. that night.
The vehicle in which they are thought to have traveled to the school was also caught on video in the parking lot.
Oberbeck said the suspects broke into several buses and one building on the north end of the school near where the buses are parked. They then tried to break into at least one other building on the south end of the campus.
Nothing of value was taken in the break-in, and there was no vandalism, Oberbeck said.
School officials noticed the break-ins, checked the security video, and called the Sheriff’s Office.
No one at the school or the Sheriff’s Office recognized the suspects on the video, which raises the possibility that they are not residents, Oberbeck added.
Anyone who recognizes any of the suspects or has information about the incident is asked to call Doug Oberbeck at 252-475-9355 or school resource officer Gary Kierney.
