Ocean overwash reported near Pea Island Visitor Center on Sunday
Ocean overwash was reported near the Pea Island Visitor Center on Sunday, September 8, after dunes in the immediate area were washed out. N.C. Highway 12 remains open and passible, but travelers are advised to use caution due to standing water and sand on the highway.
High tide occurred at approximately noon on Sunday, September 8, and additional overwash may be possible with the next high tide cycle at approximately 11:30 p.m. Sunday night.
Ocean overwash was not reported on any other portion of N.C. Highway on Hatteras Island as of Sunday afternoon, however, minor accumulations of sand were reported in several locations.
