As the recent Christmas Tree Lighting in Hatteras village cemented, the holiday season has officially arrived on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands, and the Island Free Press is brewing up some cool new ways to share our local holiday spirit with our off-island readers.
For the first time ever, the Island Free Press will be covering the annual Hatteras Village Christmas Parade live on Saturday, December 14, at 2:00 p.m.
It might not be exactly the same as watching the parade in person, (as there’s no possibility of scooping up all that candy, which is unfortunate), but we hope our live coverage will allow everyone to enjoy a 28-year-old tradition that’s always a favorite holiday event for our local community.
In addition, you may have already noticed that the Island Free Press has launched new video coverage for some of our islands’ biggest stories and more photogenic features. Produced by our talented contributor and reporter, Rory Kelleher, we hope this new multi-media approach will allow us to provide more and better coverage for all varieties of stories, both good and bad. From live storm updates to visual explorations around the island, we are excited about this upcoming addition to our island news! (Get a sneak peek at what’s to come, video-wise, with our recent story on Ocracoke Island’s opening day.)
There are many more reasons to celebrate this season, too. For one thing, we just eked past the last day of the 2019 Hurricane Season, and for another, we are gratefully starting to shift our focus from storm stories and post-Dorian updates to upcoming holiday events, charities, and other joyous reasons to get into a holiday state of mind. (Bake sales and Christmas shopping, anyone?)
As Christmas approaches, you’ll find that there is a lot going on in the technical off-season, as well as a wide array of local businesses that are open for some island-themed gifts, holiday dinners out, and everything in between. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have an event to share, and keep checking our events page as more and more holiday celebrations are added to the calendar.
Simply put, there are ample reasons to be merry as the end of 2019 approaches, and we look forward to sharing all of these holiday festivities and more with you in the days and weeks to come!
