The Dare County Department of Health & Human Services (DCDHHS) will be offering Foster Parent Training classes beginning November 5, 2024. The training includes nine classes held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday evenings with the exception of Thanksgiving Day.
“Children in our community urgently need loving foster homes as they come into foster care through no fault of their own,” said DCDHHS Foster Home Licensing Social Worker Brittany Canter. “Dare County is seeking compassionate individuals who can provide long-term, short-term, or respite care for these children. Your support could truly make a world of difference in the life of a child.”
The classes on Nov. 5 and Dec. 5 will be held in person at the Dare County Department of Health & Human Services’ Manteo campus. The remainder of the classes will be held virtually via Zoom. Completion of these classes is one of the requirements for becoming a foster parent; other requirements will be discussed and completed during the classes.
Foster care is intended to be temporary and placements can last anywhere from a night or two to a year or more. On some occasions, children may be unable to return home and another permanent plan such as adoption is possible. Children in foster care can range from birth to 21 years old, and foster parents are able to specify a desired age range for placements in their home.
