Public meetings to provide information about the Pains Bay Fire will be held June 21 and 22 at various locations throughout Dare County.
Officials from the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Dare County, including local public health representatives, will discuss the fire, firefighting techniques, smoke drift, and related health concerns. A question-and-answer session will follow short presentations.
The meetings are:
Tuesday, June 21, at 10 a.m. in Rodanthe at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Building, Milepost 39.5, Rodanthe (across the street from Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station).
Tuesday, June 21, at 2 p.m. on Roanoke Island at the Dare County Administration Building (Commissioners Meeting Room), 954 Marshall Collins Drive, Manteo
Wednesday, June 22, at 10 a.m. in Southern Shores at Kern P. Pitts Center, Town Hall Complex, 5375 N. Va. Dare Trail.
Wednesday, June 22, at 2 p.m. at Kill Devil Hills Town Hall (Commissioners Meeting Room), 102 Town Hall Drive.
The 70-square-mile fire, which started from a lightning strike and was reported on May 5, is burning on the Dare County mainland, approximately 1 mile west of Stumpy Point and 9 miles south of Manns Harbor. More than 200 personnel from various local, state and federal agencies are involved in firefighting efforts.
