Severe weather is possible on Thursday afternoon and evening ahead of an approaching cold front, per an update from the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport / Morehead City office.
The main hazard will be damaging wind gusts of 40-50 mph, although an isolated tornado is possible. Strong winds this morning will strengthen further today, and a High Surf Advisory has been issued from Cape Hatteras to Cape Lookout due to large breaking waves of 7 to 12 feet expected in the surf zone.
The High Surf Advisory is in effect from 2:00 p.m. Thursday until 8:00 a.m. Friday, while a Gale Warning is also in effect for the Pamlico Sound waters from 3:00 p.m. Thursday until 3:00 a.m. Friday.
Scattered thunderstorms are also forecast through Thursday night, and up to an inch of rainfall is possible through the evening.
